On February 7, 2007, Luke Pier (age 13) was diagnosed with a bulging dilated aortic root (aneurysm). Luke was brought to a pediatric cardiologist because
of his sunken chest and “heart cramping”. Luke is now being monitored
to determine the relationship between his aneurysm and a connective tissue disorder.
In order to prolong Luke’s life, he must have surgery on the aneurysm.
The doctors are now monitoring Luke to determine when the surgery will be needed. This surgery alone will cost
an estimated $500,000.00. The family has decided to form The Luke Pier Foundation.
Luke's main goal for The Luke Pier Foundation is to donate to other organizations that are performing medical research surrounding
connective tissue disorders as well as help others with medical needs.
Luke’s
family immediately began researching connective tissue disorders and dilated aortic roots to educate themselves and to find
out where Luke would receive the best care. Because of the sensitive nature of
Luke’s condition, they felt that they would be better off having his surgery performed at a hospital specializing in
pediatric aortic repairs. They have determined that Johns Hopkins
Hospital in Baltimore, MD is the best place for Luke’s treatment.
Luke is the 7th of 10 children. He has 5 brothers and 4 sisters
total. He is a happy, active 13 year old who loves to play baseball, drums and
loves to fish. He has a charismatic personality and often talks of his future
desires to pitch for a MLB team, play the drums and become a pilot.
Luke continues to have a positive attitude. He firmly believes that the Foundation
will raise the funds needed to make a positive impact on medical research and other families affected by connective tissue
disorders and/or other medical needs.
